The term peripherals refers to all hardware devices that are attached to your computer and are controlled by your computer system. Peripherals can be classified into input devices and output devices. Some can be also both.

An interface is the hardware and software needed between a processor and a peripheral device in order to compensate for differences in their operating characteristics. An interface will have to perform many of the functions such as buffering, data format conversion, voltage conversion,protocol conversion and status signal handling.

Some input peripheral devices are keyboard, pointing devices, scanning devices, voice input device and Handwriting Recognition Device .

Some output peripheral devices are Visual Display Unit(VDU), 2 common types of monitor(CRT and LCD), Printer( Laser printer, Inkjet Printer,Dot matrix printer), Plotter and Voice Output Devices.Some storage devices are Floppy Disk,Hard Disk, Optical disk,Magnetic tape,removable disk and Flash memory cards .

A peripheral device is generally defined as any auxiliary device such as a computer mouse or keyboard.

    We use device drivers because device drivers tell the system software how to work with that piece of hardware.Some common device drivers are built in the system softwre e.g. keyboard and mouse drives.

    Some properties of the devices are: monitor resolution, monitor refresh rate, printer properties, data/signal rate and bandwidth.
